We are pleased to be offering today this Victorian walnut and mahogany davenport/shipmasters desk that dates from the 1880s. Back when ships were being used, the captains quarters were small and they used these desks to keep their ledgers tidy. This one must have come from a high ranking captain as this is better than usual having a ditty box on top to hold writing utensils and ink wells built in.
The overall size is 22 by 23 by 35. The drawers are 10.5 by 16.
The heavily worn leather top reveals a maple double drawer cubby hole interior. The right hand side has four drawers to open for plenty of storage. The left hand side has four simulated drawers so that the desk could go against a wall. It has big carved front posts, picture frame mahogany panels in the front and a nice ogee bevel edge on the top. The overall condition is good. The leather is worn for added charm and character. There are no keys, but the locks are intact.
