Proprietor John Julia has been selling antiques for close to five decades, an adventure that started as a young teenager when he ran the roads with his father "picking" antiques out of the attics and basements of old farms across Maine and Canada.

John bought and resold his very first piece at 14 years old -  and has since developed a deep base of knowledge for all things from the Empire and Victorian era to post-WWII era, a keen eye that was born from an affinity for Westerns and the rober barrons of the American Industial Revolution.

In the 1980s John was one of the largest Wholesale dealers on the East Coast, and in the mid-1990s with the advent of eBay, he shifted his business to an online model, becoming one of the first eBay antique dealers. The internet has revolutinized the antique business, and allowed Maine Antique Furniture  to build our company from a local to global.

At MaineAntiqueFurniture.com we understand that buying furniture online is never quite the same as being able to experience it in person. We do everything in our power to represent our collection as accurately as possible. We photograph our offerings in a purpose-built studio under lighting conditions designed to show accurate color representation and high resolution detail. We realize you'll need our best efforts in order to make a good purchase decision. We shoot every angle, try to capture every detail of interest and point out any flaws that we've found on every item. We isolate our subjects from the studio backgrounds including the floor, the ceiling, walls and mirror reflections for the single purpose of allowing the viewer to concentrate on the subjects. We never use photography tricks, or software special effects because your satisfaction and our reputation mean everything to us. Because video monitors vary in the colors they display based on a number of variables, your item may not look exactly the same in your home as it does in our photos. Our professional photography staff are always willing to work with you to insure your complete confidence. If you have any questions, or would like to see more photographs of a particular item, we invite you to post your questions or requests in the comments section found at the bottom of each item's page.

2. What are the delivery charges for my item?

Our delivery prices are always listed in our descriptions. For additional information click here for our Shipping Page. If you have further questions please contact us by clicking here.

3. How do I know if my purchase will fit in my home?

In the item’s description we give the dimensions for each piece. Keep in mind that we are listing the maximum dimensions. For example, a china closet with a curved front will have the depth measured from the back to the farthest point of the curved front as well as the height being measured to the highest point.

4. How do I know if the item I am interested in is in original condition?

We try to describe items as accurately as we can. Condition is a relative term. The following is a glossary of a few terms we use:

“Excellent Original” – An item with a clear original finish. The grain of the wood is plainly visible and there are few, if any, age marks on the wood surface. The item will be professionally cleaned by our experts at MaineAntiqueFurniture.com.

“Good Original” – Like the above with some minor touch ups. Some spots might have minor crazing in the finish and the surface may have small nicks or scratches.

“Fair Original” – The piece will generally be dark with some crazing of the finish. In some places, the grain of the wood may be hard to distinguish.

“Restored Original” – Some finishes are in very good shape but have accumulated dirt and wax build-up over the years. We thoroughly clean and over-spray the piece with a dull-rub clear-lacquer finish to give a consistent appearance, adding depth to the finish.

“Refinished” – If a piece is in fine condition but has a highly crackled finish or surface scratches, we will remove the old finishes and apply a transparent wood stain with multiple coats of medium rubbed lacquer. You can expect a clear, even finish with the grain of the wood very bold.

“Cleaned” – Every one of our items is hand-cleaned with Restore-A-Finish, which feeds the wood, brightens the finish, and blends most minor surface scratches.

5. I see my item has a lock and keys. Will the keys and locks work?

As a general rule, if an item is photographed with a key, you should receive a key with your purchase.  If a key gets lost between here & your delivery, let us know and we will be able to arrange a suitable replacement key in the rare event that this should this happen. It is important to realize that old locks can fail for any number of reasons, and are quite temperamental.  There are all sorts of levels of functionality, but we cannot gurantee any one, as old locks can work quite well, then get a little touchy for a bit, and then go right back to working again.  Or, some of them get stuck and never become unstuck. There are many different reasons why this can happen, including a change in humidity, movement during transport, etc.  We don’t replace or service locks ourselves, and most customers do not seem to mind that there is a possibility that locks might not be functioning; however, if it is important to you, please note that the best way to guarantee that your locks will work is to have them professionally serviced once they reach your location. Please feel free to ask us more about keys and locks for any particular item before your purchase.
