This antique hall bench is from the Gothic Revival era, and dates from the late 19th century. European in origin, this bench is possibly constructed of beech, and is a nicely carved example with oversized pierced crest of interwoven leafy tendrils centering a grotesque mask of a creature with open mouth and fierce brow with deep set eyes. The facial features are framed by thick wavy fur, and the solid back panel is similarly carved with a mask amidst dense foliate vinery within a deep molded frame flanked by pierce carved foliate scrolled arms, the leaf carved arm rests capped with volutes, joined to S-curved supports. The seat is fitted with a leaf carved hinged panel opening to a storage well. The front with a carved panel centering a grotesque mask which conforms to the back panel. The pilasters of the box seat are also enhanced with masks. All above a well carved molded and stepped plinth raised on scrolled carved feet. The bench retains the original ebonized black finish, and measures 58” h x 46” w overall x 21” d. This antique bench has minor repairs to the crest visible from the back, otherwise it is very good.
