This outstanding Gothic Revival carved hall bench dates from the 1880s and is likely of European origin. This bench is a remarkable example of the period’s craftsmanship, featuring dramatic figural carving and bold architectural details.
The carved crest showcases scrolling leaf tips flanked by foliate finials, above a band of carved vines. Below, the back panel is deeply relief-carved with alternating Elizabethan-like busts and plumed armor helmets, with military shields and coats of arms.
The armrests have satyr’s head grips; and the hinged plank seat opens to reveal storage. The base is adorned with four winged griffins or gargoyles centering an urn, and rests on a molded base with scrolled feet.
Dimensions:
Width: 65 inches
Depth: 23 inches
Height: 52 inches
The bench remains in its original dark surface and patina, and is in great overall condition. There is some beading missing on the right side, and there appears to be some repairs to the central crest. Aside from that, there is minor general wear consistent with age and use, and the bottom of the seat well is absent. But the piece remains sturdy and visually beautiful, and will look great in any home.
This Gothic Revival hall bench is a true statement piece, blending utility with dramatic artistry. It would serve as a striking focal point in an entryway, hall, or grand interior.
