This antique Daniel Pabst Secretary Desk is a diminutive and rare piece by the renowned German-born American cabinet maker. Dating from the 1880s Victorian era, this antique secretary desk features inlaid mahogany. Pabst is credited with some of the most extraordinary custom interiors and handcrafted furniture in the United States. Sometimes working in collaboration with architect Frank Furness (1839-1912), he made pieces in the Renaissance Revival, Neo-Grec, Modern Gothic, and Colonial Revival styles. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This wonderful secretary desk is made of Mahogany with molded frieze; a central shield-form cartouche flanked by floral sprays at the center, above a drop front marquetry inlaid panel of ornate and finely crafted floral design. The hinged panel opens to a nicely fitted bird's eye maple interior of pigeon holes and document drawers. The lid interior has a lined writing surface that is original and in pristine condition. Beneath the writing surface is a pair of fully carved seated winged griffins 21 inches in height centering a floral carved apron which are joined to an open shelf behind which is a finished paneled back with the whole on a conforming apron support. SIZE: 50-1/2" h x 37-1/2" h x 16" d. CONDITION: Very fine to excellent original surfaces with untouched original patina.
