We’re pleased to be offering this most scarce, rare and unusual rocking chair, the likes of which I’ve never seen in my 43 years in the antique business. I believe it was made in May of 1906, but it could be earlier. I believe my friend’s great-grandparents had this chair when they got married, but I don’t know the entire story. On the back stretcher are three maple business card-size labels. One says May 1906; the second one says L.B.F., and the next card says E.H.F. This could have been their anniversary gift. The chair itself is mind-boggling. I have no idea what kind of wood this is, which embarrasses me, but that’s how unique it is. It does have all kind of work in it, including maple incised carved into the chair, is all mortised, pegged, and is unbelievable. The rockers have inlay and are all carved. The back has a double curved maple inserted back, and the chair looks like it is inlaid, but it’s all very interesting. It’s all original, including the original leather seat, which has some charming cracks, and is very usable. The size is 17.5 inches wide, 17 inches deep from the back post to the front of the leg, the rocker itself is 25 inches long, 32 inches high to where it naturally sits, and 17 inches high to the center of the angled seat. This is a great example of folk art and a tribute to someone’s love. This is a one-of-a-kind piece.
