SOLD AN EXQUISITE PAIR OF RENAISSANCE REVIVAL CARVED WALNUT ARMCHAIRS
19th century, American. The maiden’s bust crest flanked by leafy volutes above the frieze carved with a satanic mask flanked by delicate leafy vinery on a textured gold painted ground. The rectangular back panel is upholstered in a rich deep emerald green silk fabric within a bead and reel molded border flanked by freestanding acanthus carved gold trimmed fluted colonettes surmounted by ball tipped finials. The horizontal arms with padded arm rests, the hand grips with carved volutes on turned acanthus carved and fluted gold trimmed supports. The over upholstered trapezoidal seat above the apron is carved with a row of overlapping leaves centering a floral rosette. The whole is raised on blocked acanthus carved and gold painted fluted legs on suppressed ball feet joined by a molded H-form stretcher. PROVENANCE: From the personal collection of a prominent Stowe, VT entrepreneur. SIZE: 26” w x 25” d x 49-1/2” h overall. 27” h at the arms, 17-1/2” h at the seat. CONDITION: Professionally reupholstered in a high quality silk demask and professionally restored within the last 15 years. Frame tightened. Old surfaces are refurbished and polished. Gold paint accents are heightened. Fine mellow patina. One ball on a finial has been damaged and poorly reattached, otherwise very good to excellent. The finial damage is easily restorable.
