A beautiful circa 1890 Victorian roll-top desk constructed in richly figured quarter-sawn tiger oak and retaining its original finish. This substantial raised-panel desk was most likely made by the Standard Desk Company of Herkimer, New York, once known as the “desk capital of the world.”

The oak throughout this desk is especially attractive, with more than 30 raised tiger-oak panels incorporated into the front, sides, back, and tambour section. The extensive paneled construction gives the desk a finished architectural presence from virtually every angle.

Roll the tambour upward to reveal an exceptionally useful fitted interior filled with pigeonholes, document slots, dividers, letter compartments, two small drawers, and organizing spaces. Both pedestal columns also feature pull-out writing trays, providing additional work surface when needed.

The desk offers an impressive amount of storage, with four dovetailed drawers in the left pedestal, three drawers in the right pedestal, and a central drawer. The bottom right-hand drawer is a deep file drawer. Carved wooden pulls complement the oak and give the desk a handsome, cohesive Victorian appearance.

Condition

The desk retains its original finish and is in very good overall antique condition. There are normal nicks, dings, scratches, finish variations, and other signs of use consistent with a working desk approximately 135 years old, but no major condition issues were noted.

The tambour operates to reveal the fitted interior, and the desk retains its original keys.
