Outstanding circa 1890 Victorian roll-top desk made by the Cleveland Desk Company, USA, featuring beautiful quarter-sawn oak, extensive raised-panel construction, a fully fitted interior, and an extraordinary number of drawers and compartments.

Opening the tambour roll top reveals an impressive 27-drawer interior, retaining the original drawer tags. The fitted workspace includes numerous small document and organizer drawers, pigeonhole compartments, vertical dividers, and a central writing area. The desk offers an exceptional amount of storage and organization while also making a striking statement as a piece of late-19th-century American office furniture.

Below the writing surface are two pull-out writing surfaces, a wide center drawer, four dovetailed drawers in the left bank, and three drawers in the right bank. The bottom right drawer is an extra-deep 10” file drawer. The larger drawers retain handsome carved pulls, while raised-panel detailing continues around the sides and across the back, making this a beautifully finished desk from every angle.

The desk was refinished by a previous owner within approximately the last 15 years and has developed a wonderful warm patina since. The quarter-sawn oak displays excellent grain throughout, particularly across the broad writing surfaces, drawer fronts, side panels, and back.

Condition

Overall, this desk is in very nice antique condition with minor nicks, dings, scratches, finish wear, and other signs of age and use. It was refinished by a previous owner approximately 15 years ago and has since developed a wonderful patina.

Two of the small interior drawers have some chipping, but overall the extensive fitted interior is nicely preserved. Considering the complexity of the desk and its age of more than 130 years, it presents exceptionally well.

The desk comes with a key for the roll-top lock. As with all antique locks and keys, we do not guarantee the continued operation of antique locking mechanisms. Keys should be used gently and are provided as a convenience rather than as a security feature.
