This is a lovely Victorian walnut marble top half commode dating from the 1880s, featuring a shapely paneled case, beautiful burl walnut accents, and a dual-panel molded crest backsplash that’s getting harder and harder to find on these.
The marble top is a soft white with gray-green veining, rounded corners, and a molded edge. There is some light surface staining and typical wear from over a century of use, including some circular marks where perfume bottles or plants may have sat. These are only visible in certain light and don’t detract from the piece’s appeal.
The cabinet features a single hand-cut dovetailed drawer with a beautifully carved walnut pull and a burl walnut panel on the door. The door also retains its original turned knob and opens to reveal storage below. Paneled sides and turned bun-style feet complete the look.
This piece also includes some carved detail work under the backsplash that appears to have once extended outward—likely removed by a previous owner to fit the piece into a tighter space. There are small cracks and holes where those carvings were once attached.
Dimensions:
• Width: Just over 19 inches
• Depth (including knob): 19 inches
• Height to marble surface: 29 inches
• Height to top of backsplash: Just over 37 inches
⸻
Condition:
This piece is in good, solid antique condition with the following age-appropriate details:
• Light staining and subtle ring marks on the marble top
• One crack in the cabinet door from seasonal wood movement
• Chip next to the door hinge, does not affect door function
• Repair to the panel on the inside of the door
• Some carving appears to have been removed from under the backsplash on both sides
• Small crack and holes where carvings were once attached
• Piece of molding missing from the crest and a detail above the left front foot
• The drawer functions well and is structurally sound
• Door closes properly with original knob, despite a missing piece of wood on the knob’s backside
None of these imperfections affect function or beauty—they’re simply part of this piece’s long story. It has a wonderful aged patina, solid structure, and original Victorian charm.
This is a highly decorative yet practical piece of 19th-century furniture that would look incredible in a hallway, bathroom, or bedroom.
