MAGNIFICENT CARVED MAHOGANY PARTNER’S DESK ATTRIBUTED TO R.J. HORNER & CO. NEW YORK. Late 19th-Early 20th century. The rectangular top with inset burgundy gold gilt tooled leather writing surface with cross banded mahogany border and round molded edge. The case fitted with a central foliate carved drawer flanked by a cupboard door on the left carved with a pair of songbirds above a central cartouche amongst vinery in deep relief, and a bank of two short drawers on the right carved with scrolling leaf tips. The opposing side similarly carved. Each drawer with a massive carved lion mask handle. The case ends of the desk with inset mahogany panel. This exceptional example features legs carved as full body lions with open mouths, over acanthus carved legs with winged returns terminating in well-defined paw feet. R.J. Horner & Co. is known for their exceptional quality of lion and griffin carved furniture in mahogany and oak. The fine quality of these pieces is world renowned. SIZE: 30” h x 56” w x 34” d. CONDITION: The desk is in very fine structural condition. Surfaces professionally cleaned and re-polished by hand. Color is rich with mellow patina. The leather writing surface exhibits normal and expected slight wear. Very good to excellent.
