We are pleased to be offering today this beautiful Empire pre civil war leaded top flip top secretary desk that dates from the 1840's to 1860's.  This wonderful item came out of a home right here in California, but I am pretty sure this piece originate from the east coast.  This piece is in great condition for the age.  The only damage we see is one small piece of cracked glass on the right hand door, numerous veneer chips on the crown where it probably happened in transport, on the inside of the flip lid there is a few veneer chips and one surface crack on the left hand side of the bookcase section up near the crown molding.  For this desk being around for over 150 years, it is in great condition.  It has a flame mahogany or crotch mahogany face on the drawers, lid and entire front of the desk.  It has the most unusual leaded door inserts which show up rarely in empire furniture.  It has a heavy bevel crown molded top that lifts off, the leaded door section and then the desk section.  the desk section has three hand cut dove tail section with two small drawers above the writing section. It has pillar fronts with the most unusual leg of a reverse turnip style..  it has the original knobs, glass and original finish with the exception that it was likely re-varnished at some point. When you flip the lid down and pull out the top drawer for support, it has a fabric insert that most people replace with leather. It even has a quill pen and antique ink bottle.  The overall size is 44 by 22 by 37 inches high on the base.  The top is 43 by 12 by 53 inches high.  The crown is wider due to the overhang which is 52 inches wide.  The entire desk is 90 inches tall.  Shipping starts at $325 for a driveway delivery in our normal area.  Please contact us prior to purchase to confirm that you are in our normal area.  Please bookmark our site as we are listing new items day by day.
