SOLD Antique Roll Top Desk - Custom Mahogany Roll Top by Derby

This antique roll top desk is one of the nicer oversized mahogany roll top desks that we’ve ever had the pleasure of owning, which is saying something because we’ve been in the business for over 50 years and we’ve had a lot of nice desks.

Dating from the 1880s-1890s, this Derby Roll Top is an oversized 66” wide, with heavy duty raised panels throughout the entire desk, carved drawer pulls, a wonderful carved interior, carving throughout, and the really outstanding thing about this desk is that it was purchased out of a home where the client had it refinished quite a few years ago in what they call a piano finish. This means that it was all stripped, sanded, stained, paste-filled (which fills all the pores in the mahogany), and then multiple coats of satin-sheen lacquer were applied, and hand rubbed. It’s just stunning in person! The finish, I believe, is about 15 years old. There are some nicks and dings and very minor flaws, but overall, it’s beautiful. The client said they paid $3800 to have this desk restored at the time. It’s really something to see in person. It has a unique interior - everything’s there, including the keyhole that says Derby.

The size is quite unique because it’s 66 inches wide, 38 inches deep, the height to the writing surface is 32 inches high, and 52 inches high to the top of the desk. It does not have the key; this desk does not have the traditional center lock — it locks on the sides, so we have removed those locks. We will include the locks, and you should be able to find a locksmith local to you to make you a key.

When you open up the roll, it exposes a beautiful, multi drawer, multi-cubby hole, and extensively carved, interior. Everything’s there. The raised panels are thicker than usual; even the wings on the sides of the desk are 2 inches thick, which is super nice and abnormal. There are four hand cut, dovetail drawers on the left-hand bank, and a big pull out tray. On the right hand bank, there are two drawers above the extra size file drawer, which measures 14 inches wide and 10 inches high. This of course looks like two drawers but is simulated two drawers, but is actually a file drawer, as you would commonly find on these roll top desks.

There’s a large center drawer, which is 25 inches wide, the area where your legs go is 26 inches wide and 26 inches high in the middle. There’s all original hardware, there’s a couple of pieces of carving that had to be replaced, you can see this in the photos, but overall, it is outstanding. It’s heavy, and it does break down into multiple pieces for a home delivery. If you buy this desk you’ll be hard-pressed to find another one that is equal to it. It is beautiful and we are very happy to be offering it to you today. Derby outdid themselves on this desk!
