This antique dresser or commode is built of oak and dates from the 1890s. We used to get these quite often, but they are getting more and more scarce - we haven’t seen an antique oak commode in years. This model is called a hotel commode, and is something you would see in a boarding house, hotel, or bedroom. This antique commode has a swivel bevel glass mirror with a carving on top, a little towel rack on the side and on the base cabinet there are drawers and a door to put your slop or potty jar in the base cabinet. Then you would put the bowl and pitcher on top of the commode to clean up for work in the morning. This antique came out of a NYC estate, where it was refinished about 30 years ago. We tightened up the base from normal wear. The commode base is serpentine front on the top, and has dove tail drawers, large drawer on top and two small drawers running down the left-hand side. The top has a carved triple yolk bevel glass swivel mirror and towel rack. The overall size is 42.5 inches wide, 21 inches deep and 33 inches high to the top of the base. The height to the top of the dresser is 69 inches high. The original bevel glass mirror shows age marks and is 28 inches high by 19 inches wide. This antique commode has a shipping furniture label on the back saying handle with care and there are remnants of a company label on the back of the mirror as well. It is a great looking piece all set to go into the home.
