This elegant three-piece French Victorian parlor set dates from the late 19th century and includes a three-seat sofa, a gent’s chair, and a ladies’ chair. Together, the set presents a richly decorative and highly sculptural presence, showcasing the artistry and symbolism characteristic of fine French Victorian furniture.

All three pieces are upholstered in a light, neutral brocade fabric that beautifully complements the warm tone of the carved wood frames. The gent’s wingback chair is upholstered in a subtly different patterned fabric, offering gentle visual contrast while remaining cohesive with the set.

Carved Details & Decorative Motifs

The carving throughout this set is particularly notable and finely executed, with deep relief and pierced elements that add dimension and drama:
• Gentleman’s Chair
This imposing chair features bold, masculine carving motifs. The arms are adorned with stylized goose heads and scrolling foliate forms, while the crest rail showcases ornate floral and foliate carvings, lending the chair a dignified, authoritative presence. The wingback form enhances both comfort and visual impact.
• Ladies’ Chair
More delicate in scale and proportion, the ladies’ chair features refined carving with baskets of flowers, scrolling foliage, and pierced floral center details. The lighter visual weight and graceful lines were traditionally intended to suit formal parlor seating for women.
• Sofa
The sofa echoes the decorative language of the chairs, with beautifully carved floral motifs, scrolling elements, and cut-out floral centerpieces, the intricately carved crest, and carved geese/peacocks along arms. Condition Notes

This set is in very good condition, and displays age-appropriate wear consistent with its late 19th-century origin, including surface wear to the wood and finish, minor softness to carved edges, and some minor, expected wear to the upholstery. There are some minor seam separations, and some age appropriate cracks in the carvings and a few minor snags in the fabric here and there. There is a small chip on the right hand arm of the sofa as you stand looking at it. This set is so beautiful, none of this matters, but we like to be thorough here at Maine Antique Furniture.

These characteristics are typical of authentic Victorian furniture, is not structural and do not detract from the overall beauty or usability of the set.
