This antique cylinder secretary desk features a bookcase top, incise carving, and dates from the Victorian era of the 1880s. This beautiful antique desk came out of a home on the East coast, and has most likely been refinished in the last decade or so. The bookcase top has double glass doors and retains its original glass panes that open to show three adjustable shelves. The cylinder opens up and shows some wear and ink stains on the interior, as you can see in the photos. Note the pullout writing surface, which appears to maintain the timeworn, original covering. This antique desk includes a drawer, and double door storage that opens up below the writing surface.
The pierce carved crest on top of this antique cylinder secretary desk is still intact, which is nice, as they are often missing on these antiques. The hardware appears to be original, and this piece comes with no key. There is a flaw in the burl on the cylinder roll, which is a notoriously porous wood to begin with, but is not offensive. Please see in the photos.
The overall size is 38 inches wide, 21 inches deep on the base, and 31 inches high to the writing surface. The bookcase top is 11 inches deep, and the overall height of the entire cabinet is 97 inches tall. The actual height of the bookcase itself is 53 inches tall to the top of the crest.
Overall, this is a lovely antique cylinder secretary desk. If your ceilings cannot accommodate this 97 inch desk, you can remove the casters to fit a 96 inch space. Reasonably priced, we just love cylinder secretary desks, and any kind of antique office equipment, to be honest.
