We are pleased to be offering today this beautiful German Beidermeier mahogany, burl elm, and bird’s eye maple ebony inlaid multi-drawer drop-down lid Abante desk, dating from the 1850s to 1860s. It is always amazing how well-preserved these antique pieces are when they make it to the states.
The front features an ogee molded hand-cut dovetail drawer, and below it, a drop-down lid that opens to reveal a bird’s eye maple multi-drawer interior with shapely cutouts, a tan gold tool embossed writing surface, and large metal brackets to support the lid. Below the lid are three additional drawers. The desk comes with a key, but we cannot guarantee that the locks are functional, as antique locks are temperamental and can shift during shipment.
Despite being nearly 175 years old, this desk is in good condition, though it does have a few minor flaws consistent with its age. It has some pressure cracks due to the amount of veneer on the desk, which can dry out over time. This is normal in pieces this old and does not detract from the piece in any way. We only mention for clarity. There’s a crack on the top, which isn’t visible unless you are tall, and there are some rub marks on the sides and a small quarter-sized area of missing burl on the drop-down lid.
Despite these minor imperfections, the piece remains in great shape and would be a great addition to any collection.
