We are pleased to be offering this superb pair of Victorian Walnut Closed Arm Gentleman's Armchairs to you today. Dating from the 3rd quarter of the 19th Century, each armchair features a shield crest surmounted by a carved fan, flanked by pendant finials. The crest rail with scrollwork and carved leaf tips at each ear. The frame has a continuous upholstered back, sides and seat covered in a floral pattern demask, which is likely original. The walnut shaped arm supports are capped with rosettes. Each chair is raised on tapering ring-turned, cylindrical front legs and carved, square rear legs all terminating in casters. The frame of each chair is decorated with incised lines heightened by gold paint.
PROVENANCE: From the personal collection of a prominent Stowe, VT entrepreneur. SIZE: 30” w x 29” d x 42” h overall; 24” h at the arm, 16” h at the seat. CONDITION: Chairs retain old surfaces with rich patina. Reupholstered approximately 20 years ago. One seat is worn and has a water stain. One arm is worn. The applied shield on one armchair crest is absent. Otherwise very good. You are buying the pair for one money.
