Derby Oak Raised Panel Roll Top Desk – c.1890 #22623

This impressive antique oak roll top desk was manufactured by the highly regarded Derby Desk Company around 1890 and remains a wonderful example of late Victorian office furniture. Constructed of solid quarter-sawn oak and retaining its original finish, this substantial desk features an uncommon swing-side design that provides exceptional access to the writing area and interior compartments.

The desk showcases remarkable craftsmanship with 29 raised panels throughout its construction, highlighting the quality and attention to detail for which Derby was known. The tambour roll opens smoothly to reveal a beautifully organized interior fitted with multiple cubbyholes, letter slots, and small drawers for office supplies and correspondence.

Both sides of the upper section swing outward, creating convenient access to the side compartments and expanding the functionality of the workspace. The desk features eight pedestal drawers, a large center drawer, a pull-out writing surface, and an extra-deep file drawer. This unusual configuration provides abundant storage while maintaining an elegant appearance.

Condition

Good antique condition with original finish throughout. The top surface shows some staining from a plant pot and a visible lamination seam that can be professionally corrected if desired. The pencil slide covers are missing, and a couple of the original metal pulls are no longer present. The desk remains structurally sound and highly functional, with excellent color and character.
