A wonderful and increasingly hard-to-find complete set of eight solid mahogany dining chairs dating to the 1930s, featuring elegant ribbon-form backs and an especially charming collection of individual needlepoint seats.

The backs are the highlight of the frames, constructed with four shaped horizontal cross slats, each incorporating a graceful carved scroll or ribbon motif at the center. The repeating curves give these chairs a much more decorative appearance than a traditional ladder-back while still keeping the design light and open. The dark mahogany finish pairs beautifully with the rich colors of the needlepoint upholstery.

What really makes this set unique, however, is the collection of eight different needlepoint seat covers. Rather than matching upholstery, each chair has its own design, with floral, botanical, bird and decorative motifs in warm, traditional colors. The variation gives the set tremendous character and makes it particularly appealing for an eclectic or collected interior.

The needlepoint appears to have some age and shows varying degrees of wear. Several remain quite attractive as they are, while others would benefit from cleaning or eventual replacement depending on the buyer’s preference. The seats could also easily be recovered while preserving the existing needlepoint if desired.

The chairs have classic straight legs with stretchers on all four sides and are tight, sturdy and ready for use. Finding an intact set of eight antique/vintage mahogany dining chairs is becoming increasingly difficult, making this an excellent option for a larger dining table.

Condition

Good overall vintage condition. The mahogany frames show minor nicks, scratches, finish wear and other signs of normal use consistent with their age. The chairs remain tight and sturdy.

The needlepoint upholstery varies in condition from chair to chair and shows age, wear, fading and some soiling. A simple cleaning may improve several of the seats, while the fabric could also be replaced if desired. These have not been represented as newly restored chairs, and the existing age and wear are reflected in the price.
