This beautifully carved Victorian square center table dates to the 1880s–1890s and features stunning proportions, intricate detailing, and a wonderful square form. Measuring 31 inches wide, 31 inches deep, and 29 inches tall, it’s a showpiece of Victorian decorative woodworking, suitable as a center table, occasional table, hall table, sofa table, or statement accent piece.
The top features a warm brown finish w/ delicately carved daisy and foliate motifs in each corner. These decorative rosettes are surrounded by multiple layers of molded and beveled edges, adding dimension and elegance. The tabletop surface shows typical age-related wear including light pitting, a few scratches, and a previously repaired crack along one edge—but all blend beautifully into the overall patina and do not detract from the stunning presence of the piece.
The skirt is beautifully framed and molded with mitered corners and five applied roundel medallions on each side—a nice detail that adds rhythmic ornamentation to the apron. This finely carved edgework continues all around, tying the top visually to the ornate base.
At the center, a square tapered pedestal rises from a stepped and fluted platform base. It’s decorated with incised foliate carving, scrollwork, and a central oval medallion on each side. The base also includes a solid lower platform shelf, offering serious structural support.
Surrounding the pedestal are beautifully turned vertical balusters, each shaped with stacked ring turnings and fluted lower sections. These create a visually striking, gallery-like structure between the tabletop and the base shelf—one of the most beautiful architectural features of this piece.
At each corner are bold, deeply carved paw feet with prominent central toenails—a signature Victorian detail. One foot has a chip in one knuckle, but it’s not easily noticed unless you’re inspecting the piece up close. The platform beneath the center measures just over 5½ inches off the floor.
Condition:
This table is over 130 years old and shows minor wear consistent with age and use:
• Surface shows minor scratches, dings, and pitting
• A repaired crack on one edge of the tabletop (visible in photos)
• One carved claw foot has a small chip in the knuckle
• Minor finish thinning and edge wear, especially at corners
• Light waviness to the top, nothing that negate how excellent this table is!
None of these imperfections affect the stability or aesthetic appeal of this highly decorative piece.
This is a gorgeous example of Victorian craftsmanship with classic proportions and masterful ornamentation—perfect as a centerpiece in a foyer, parlor, or reading room.
