We are pleased to be offering today this beautiful tiger sawn oak heavily carved unusual bookcase slant top ladies secretary desk that dates from the 1890s to 1900s. This model is called the Heinz 57 desk in the antique world. If you haven’t figured out why, look at the shape of the shield mirror which is like the shape of the ketchup bottle design. The mirror is all nice with a 1 inch exposed multi-curved bevel glass mirror in good condition that is in a cutout scallop frame that is held up with two winged serpents that appear to be water born as they have tails. Below the mirror are two bow front drawers, a slant top lid with carving on the front, glass two door bookcase section and then two ox bow drawers on the bottom with egg and dart molding. The entire desk is held up with four detail claw feet. This desk was refinished a long time ago in a lighter color oak than normal age patina would be. It was probably done in the last 30-40 years. There are minor flaws. There is a lamination seam on the writing lid that has nothing to do with the structure of the piece. The backboard behind the glass doors was cracked and you can see a slight crack on the bottom. The back is plywood and could easily be replaced. The overall size is 32 inches wide, 16 inches deep and 70 inches tall. The writing lid is 33 inches high from the floor when opened. When the lid is opened, it reveals a multi-detail cubby hold interior with a center drawer that someone has replaced the brass knob. It has drop down lid supports. I don’t get Heinz 57 desks very often, like we used to do in the 1970s. Shipping starts at $285 for a driveway delivery in our normal area which is New England. Outside New England it will change, so please contact us prior to purchase with your zip code to obtain a quote for outside of New England for shipping.
