SOLD Antique Victorian Raised Panel Walnut Roll Top Desk – Carved Pulls - Boston
We are pleased to be offering this Victorian multi-raised panel and multi-molded roll top desk to you today. Dating from the 1885's, in original finish, this was originally sold by the Smith Company out of Boston, Massachusetts. They specialized in bank and office equipment. This piece is stamped on the inside of the drawer, and is about original as they come. It has the carved handles, three hand cut dovetail raise panel drawers on top, and two multi-depth fake drawers - the kind that looks like two drawers but is really a file cabinet, measuring about 10 inches deep. The interior is all-original with the carved pulls on the drawers, pull out pencil trays and a wonderful multi-cubby hole interior. The felt is worn, but it is original. Someone took the strike plate out because they must have lost the key. You can purchase replacement locks, but currently this desk does not lock. It has molded panels all the way around, and on the side of the desk there is a cracked panel. There are multi-raised panels all the way around and each raised panel is picture frame molded. There is dark staining on the sides as shown in the pictures. The overall size is 56 inches wide, 36 inches deep, 32 inches high to the top of the writing surface and 50 inches high to the top. The area for chair space is 23 inches wide and 28 inches high. It is amazing all the carved pulls and pull-out writing surfaces are still intact. There are the normal nicks and dings you would expect for a piece of furniture dating from the 1870s-1880s. The escutcheon right in the middle of the drawer is damaged and we can replace for the buyer if they so desire, just remind us at the time of purchase.
