

AN OUTSTANDING R.J. HORNER STYLE CARVED MAHOGANY TRESTLE TABLE. Late 19th century, New York. The rectangular parquet top with reeded edge above the shell and foliate carved apron fitted with three aligned drawers joined to trestle supports carved with lion’s head molded edges centering a semi-nude female figure with outstretched arms within scrolling grape clusters and floral borders above a Satyr’s mask, raised on paw feet. The ends are joined by a profusely carved foliate and grape cluster stretcher. Robert J. Horner opened in New York City in 1886, advertising “First-Class and Medium-Quality Furniture” to serve both wealthy and middle-class markets. R.J. Horner & Co. produced a wide range of furnishings, primarily in oak and mahogany due to a shortage of walnut. The output ran from dining-room sets to hall trees; upholstered parlor sets to desks. Horner’s furniture is marked by heavily carved surfaces covered with griffins, gargoyles, cherubs, and gadrooning. SIZE: 31-1/2” h x 71” l x 35-1/2” w. CONDITION: Normal in-use wear to surfaces. A light water stain in the top and small splits and chips overall. Generally good to very good.
