SOLD Antique Oak Museum Quality Pair of Heavily Carved Cabinets, China Closets

We are thrilled to offer this breath-taking, museum-quality matched pair of heavily carved oak court cupboards, dating back to the 1880s. These exceptional pieces, of European origin, showcase an extraordinary level of craftsmanship and detail, making them a true treasure for any antique collector or enthusiast. This pair is constructed from solid oak and is in outstanding condition, reflecting the high level of artistry from the period.
Each cabinet features heavy crown moldings and an array of intricate carvings, including lion faces, birds, cupids, angels, and more. The detailing is remarkable:
Starting at the top of one cabinet, there are lion faces on both sides, followed by cupids, various lion faces, a carved baby, and more lion faces down the front.
The carved door showcases two birds eating fruit from a wooden bowl, surrounded by nuts and berries, while the drawer face depicts two birds eating grapes.
Unlike most cabinets with plain side panels, these have carved tombstone shroud details on the base cabinet and picture frame moldings on the top cabinet.
Despite their age, the cabinets are in excellent condition with a great finish. There is an occasional crack on one of the doors, but there are no visible missing carvings. Each cabinet includes the original keys, though the functionality of the locks is uncertain. The upper glass sections feature two shelves each, while the bottom sections offer a single shelf compartment.
Though nearly identical, there are a few minor differences:
One cabinet has a back with four raised panel picture frame molded panels, while the other has a plain oak back with a central stile.
The posts at the bottom of the upper cabinets have slight differences: one has X diamond points, and the other is slightly varied.
The base cabinet carvings are mostly original, except for slight variations on the center medallion where the shields meet.
These small differences suggest they were likely crafted by different cabinetmakers in the same workshop, adding a unique character to each piece. The overall dimensions of each cabinet are:
Base Cabinet: 37 inches wide, 24 inches deep, 42 inches high.
Top Cabinet: 34 inches wide, 11 inches deep (14 inches with crown), 45 inches high.
Overall Height: 88 inches.
