We are pleased to be offering today this wonderful example of heavily carved oak slant top secretary with a bookcase top and fantastic carvings throughout. The carvings include peace birds on the top in a fruit basket, winged griffins, tombstone heavy carved arch doors, barley twist posts, serpentine lid with winged griffins on both sides, a pull-out drawer with wreath and bird carvings and lady head carvings on the outside edge. Then it goes down into a barley twist post base and a barley twist center cross brace. It is of European origin and dates from the 1880s. We had to make a repair on the bottom of the lid, but it is hardly noticeable. The desk is carved on the sides, base, and every direction you look. It comes with a hand cut dove tail drawer. When the writing surface is opened, it reveals the old felt writing surface with a multi-drawer hand cut dove tail interior. One knob is missing off one of the drawers. The desk is in nice shape for the age. It is finished in the dark fumed oak. The overall size is 33.5 inches wide, 23 inches deep, 30 inches high to the writing lid from the floor, 82 inches high overall, 27 inches wide on the inside of the barley twist posts, 12 inches deep on the bookcase top, and 29 inches high on the doors to the bookcase section. The door opens to reveal a single shelf interior. There is even egg and dart molding. The desk comes with a key, but do not guarantee the locks to work as they often need cleaning. The sides of the bookcase have raised panel inserts that are carved all over. This desk is so heavily carved that I can’t help but repeat it.
