We are pleased to be offering today this wonderful custom bench made solid mahogany dainty gallery heavily carved Chippendale cabriole ball and claw leg desk dating from the 1880s. It is in the original finish apart from the solid breadboard lid having the traditional cracks that we have touched up. The desk is well made with hand cut dove tail. It has heavy cast brass hardware, clam shell carving on the lid and bottom drawer, long drawer below the lid, and two block front drawers. When the heavy slant lid is opened it reveals a carved detail five drawer cubby hole interior with two disguised drawers behind the carved posts. It has dainty hardware that is all intact and the inside is decent. Someone spent a lot of time building this desk, and everything has a hand cut dovetail including the dainty little drawers on the interior. It is finished in a dark reddish brown stain finish that is original to the desk. Other than the lid issue, it is in great condition. It has all the original hardware, but no key. The side of the desk has a lamination crack that is obvious but isn’t going anywhere. The overall size is 32 inches wide, 19 inches deep, 30 inches high to the writing lid, and 44 inches high to the spindle gallery on top. The legs are all intact and in good shape for the heavy-duty quality of this desk. The cracks are not structural, but cosmetic. It is a great desk of high quality.
