A beautiful circa 1880 Victorian walnut hall tree that has been in a Central Maine home for generations. We have known the family who owned this piece for approximately 60 years, giving it a wonderful bit of local history.

This tall, architectural hall tree has an especially attractive shaped and pierced walnut back surrounding an oval mirror, with delicate fretwork, a hand-carved crest, turned wooden hat and coat pegs, and a small marble-topped shelf. The lower section retains its two circular umbrella or cane holders along with the embossed cast-iron drip pans still in place below.

At 88” tall, this is an impressive piece without requiring a tremendous amount of floor space. The combination of warm walnut, marble, mirror, carving, fretwork, and original age-related character makes it a wonderful statement piece for an entry hall, foyer, mudroom, or historic home.

Condition

This hall tree remains in original antique condition with normal nicks, dings, wear, and other signs of use accumulated over approximately 140 years.

The piece sat for many years in an old farmhouse where the floor had tilted somewhat. Over time, and with the weight of coats hanging on it, the hall tree developed a slight lean. It is not especially noticeable, but we want to disclose it clearly.

The marble top also has an unusual darker, mottled appearance. We were told that someone may have rubbed something onto the stone in an attempt to darken it. We cannot verify exactly what was used or what caused the appearance. It may be possible to polish or otherwise improve the marble, but we have intentionally left it as found rather than altering it.

The fretwork is intact, and the piece retains the wonderful aged character that many collectors prefer in an untouched Victorian antique.
