We are pleased to be offering this heavily carved oak sideboard in the manner of RJ Horner to you today. Dating from the last quarter 19th century, and haling out of New York, this sideboard is constructed entirely of quartersawn oak. The case with pierce carved crest with central cartouche flanked by seated Putti further flanked by facing dragons projecting “flames” carved as leaf tips, set back on a molded rectangular display shelf with serpentine molded edge with gadrooned decoration above a rectangular beveled mirror with a molded frame; joined to side panels each with deep recessed beveled clear glass rectangular panels with rounded corners. Top case ends with full length pilaster carved with allegorical half figure God-like torsos of a man with full beard and bare chest with draped tunic at his waist continued to carved acanthus leaf.  A bundle of 3 hanging fish and rope tied legumes all signifying bountiful food.  A carved paw foot is at the base of each plaster. The case is fitted with a bank of two central drawers above a pair of cabinet doors beneath a leaf carved frieze: the top drawer carved with a central Northwind masque handle flanked by opposing carved winged dragons amidst scrolling leafy tendrils. The drawer below carved with two conch shell handles within dense foliate vinery. The cupboard doors are carved with opposing fierce fanciful exotic Bird or Prey set within dense floral and fruit foliage. All carved in deep relief with wonderful detail. All are flanked by a bank of two short drawers above a single cabinet door with serpentine fronts mounted with original cast brass hardware. The sideboard with a conforming step molded plinth raised on two large central paw feet and a suppressed ball foot at each end. The case sides are unadorned and with molded and dentil molded cornice. PROVENANCE: From the personal collection of a prominent Stowe, VT entrepreneur. SIZE:  77” L x 25” D x 82 ½” H. Central Cabinet Shelf: 32 ½” L x 22 ½” D. Side Cabinet Shelf: 17” W x 19”-21” D/each. CONDITION: Structurally very good – excellent. Old shellac surface professionally removed.  Professionally polished retaining mellow “Golden Oak” tones and patina.
