Exceptional circa 1890 Victorian solid walnut extension dining table with an impressive seven original factory leaves, allowing the table to expand from a practical 47” length to approximately 118” overall — nearly ten feet long.

This is a particularly handsome example of late Victorian dining furniture, combining an extraordinarily versatile extension mechanism with the substantial carving and architectural presence associated with the period. When closed, the table measures only 45” × 47”, making it remarkably compact for a table capable of seating a very large gathering when fully extended.

The solid walnut base is the highlight of the piece. Four substantial legs feature deeply fluted, bulbous turnings above carved blocks decorated with floral rosettes, terminating in dramatic carved claw feet. Heavy curved stretchers connect the legs and give the base both excellent stability and a beautifully sculptural appearance.

When extended, additional center support legs drop into position beneath the table, providing the extra stability necessary for its impressive length. Small casters beneath the supports and base help accommodate the extension system.

The table retains all seven of its original factory leaves, an increasingly difficult feature to find intact on a Victorian extension table of this age. Five leaves measures approximately 12” wide and two are six inches wide, and together they transform the table into an exceptionally long dining surface suitable for large family gatherings, holidays and entertaining.

The table also retains its original finish, with the walnut displaying the deep, warm color and patina that comes only with age. Rather than having been stripped and refinished, the surface retains the character and history of approximately 135 years of use.

Condition

Nice original antique condition. The table is sturdy and remains in good usable condition.

The original finish shows some imperfections, particularly to the tabletop, along with the usual minor nicks, dings, scratches and finish wear expected from approximately 135 years of age and normal use. These signs of age are consistent with an antique table retaining its original finish and do not detract from its impressive overall presentation.

Importantly, all seven original factory leaves remain with the table and allow it to extend to its full approximately 118” length.

Please review all photographs closely, particularly the tabletop, leaves, carved base and original finish, as they form an important part of the condition description.
