SOLD Antique Governor Winthrop Desk, Oak Carved Desk - Museum Quality

This antique Governor Winthrop Desk is one of the nicest custom oak Chippendale carved block front slant top governor Winthrop desks we’ve seen in our 50+ years of selling antiques. Dating from the 1890's, this antique Governor Winthrop desk is one of the nicest that I have ever had the pleasure of owning, and I have owned some amazing ones in my over 50 years in the business. This antique desk features it’s original finish and a has a spindle gallery back that has one turn mini post missing. It has a big carved lion faces laughing with fangs and carving on the breadboard bevel edge slant lid. The drawer fronts are block front and have real true clam shell carving. This was no doubt a custom made piece with rope molding going down each post, rope braided along the base and detail ball and claw feet. Even the solid brass hardware is unbelievable. The overall size is 30 inches wide, 21 inches deep, 44 inches high to the top of the gallery and 30 inches high to the writing surface. When the lid is opened it is supported with pull outside supports. The interior is all tiger sawn with four drawers and a carved door. It has a few minor flaws here and there, a chip of wood above the top drawer as shown in the pictures, but it is a high end turn of the century Victorian slant top desk.
