This antique china closet, bookcase, cabinet, or cupboard dates from the 1880s and is European in origin. It features Barley twist posts, is heavily carved, and is constructed of tiger sawn oak.
When this first came in the base was loose so we went over it and made sure it was nice and tightened up for years of carefree use. On the bottom cabinet the door has a slight bow and does not close completely flush, but who would even notice under all the carving all over, even the sides. It has big barley twist posts, and large carved flowers. The handles on the drawers are actually plant vines! In the bottom doors are game-carvings - a pheasant on one side and a couple of fish on the other - similar to an American Huntboard.
Look at the carved tomb shaped doors on top, an old man lion peering down at us - there really are just carvings everywhere. Take a look at the pictures, they do this great antique a lot better justice than my words.
The cabinet is 96 inches tall (so it should fit in most modern day houses; be sure to measure your ceilings!) it comes apart in two pieces. The top china section features three shelves behind the two glass doors.
The two large doors in the base open to expose shelf-less storage. There was originally a shelf, but it’s no longer there. An easy fix - just let us know you want one at the time of sale.
Measuring 55 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 38 inches high to the base cabinet. The top cabinet is 52 inches at the widest point, 15 inches at the deepest point, and as we said earlier the overall height is 96 inches tall. The three fully adjustable shelves on the interior upper portion of the cabinet are each 9 inches deep.
