Dating from the 1860s, this is a wonderful solid black walnut carved gent’s chair in the oversized version, with a most unusual crest on top. The crest features dainty berries, leaves, nuts, and a basket with flowers carved of solid walnut. It’s a very nicely done, all hand-carved piece. It has an old-time beige brocade fabric that is old and rather weak. It is usable and not torn, but it is delicate. The fabric is worn through to the threads in the front. We did bring the chair into the shop and tightened it up, and made sure it’s all nice and sturdy. It has carved cabriole legs, floral carving on the serpentine crest, open arms with deep bold carved arms, and even carving on the back of the arm supports. It also has an oversized circle medallion. The overall size is 26 inches across the arms, 26 inches deep, 45 inches high to the top of the chair, 24 inches high to the top of the arm, and 19 inches high to the seat. We actually have a smaller arm chair that matches this, stock number 16516, if it’s still available. This one retains its original finish, patina, and brass casters.
