We are pleased to be offering today this wonderful Victorian Civil War Era hand carved solid black walnut Victorian sofa that dates from the 1860s era. Someone has reupholstered it in a light yellow silk style fabric with a beige fabric on it that almost looks like a butterfly, but I am sure it must be a floral design. They pleated and tufted the back and I am guessing it was done about 10-15 years ago. You can see where someone had a soil mark on the front of it and you can see where someone tried to scrub it out. I am thinking if you had this steamed that the water mark would go away and you could save the gorgeous upholstery if you like the color. The frame is in good condition with carved knuckles, carving down the cabriole legs right down into the scroll foot, serpentine skirt on the front and it appears that most of the carving is intact. There are a couple of pieces missing in the rolled areas that are hardly noticeable. The back has hand carved floral designs with finger hold in the center. One area had a small crack in it, but it was repaired. The sofa is large at 81 inches across, 60 inches across the inside of the arms, 26 inches from the wall to the front of the cushion and from the front of the back to the front of the cushion is 24 inches, 17 inches high to the seat, 40 inches high to the outside crest and 34 inches high to the center crest. When they reupholstered this sofa, they also added padding to make the sofa more comfortable. It is upholstered all the way around so it can be left in the middle of the room.
