We are pleased to be offering today this desk that has me wondering. It has a construction like you can not believe. It is so heavy being solid figural mahogany. It has heavy cast brass Chippendale hardware. It has the most unique mechanism that holds the writing surface up that is spring loaded. The wings stay out at all times and when you put the lid down, the springs extend to support the lid. It is definitely a bench made piece. All the secondary wood is oak. I honestly am not sure how to date it as bench made pieces are hard to date. It could be centennial or it could be 1920s, but it is a great desk. It is so heavy and the quality is fantastic. It has three solid thick mahogany block front drawer, detail ball and claw feet, solid plank sides, bevel edge clam shell carved writing surface that is supported on two spring supports and the interior is a simplistic high quality interior with four cubby holes on both sides, hand cut dove tail drawers and the interior secondary wood is mahogany. The interior also features a dome shape panel door in the center and the two cleverly disguised hidden compartments behind the pillar posts. The writing surface has solid brass locks and hinges. We have the small key for the center door in the interior, but we do not have the large key that locks the writing surface. The overall condition is good showing minor nicks and dings. The most aggravation is right where the lid comes down and it is worn in a small spot where the board hits it. The desk could use a nice French polish to bring back the luster of the classy finish. It is missing one brass handle on the bottom right hand side and we will look for the closest match we can find. Other than the key missing it is all great. Look at the panel back! Who does a back like that? This definitely not factory made. It is a great custom formal piece. There are a couple of scratches on the middle drawer that I just noticed. The overall size is 31 inches wide, 20 inches deep, 39 inches high overall and 28 inches high to the writing surface when open.
